Formals
Formal dinners are a cherished tradition at Hild Bede, offering students the chance to dress up, dine in style, and enjoy an evening of celebration with friends. Held throughout the academic year, we host between 8 and 10 formals annually, making them one of the most anticipated social events in the college calendar. Each is a black-tie affair featuring a delicious three-course meal served in a beautifully set dining hall, accompanied by drinks and lively conversation.
Unlike some other colleges, our formals are not gowned, so there’s no need to worry about sourcing academic robes. Adding to the excitement, Hild Bede formals go “on tour,” with dinners hosted in other colleges around Durham. These off-site formals offer a unique chance to experience different college settings while still enjoying the signature Hild Bede atmosphere, adding a fun twist to the tradition.
After dinner, the celebrations often continue in the college bar, where entertainment such as DJs, karaoke, or themed parties keeps the energy going late into the night. Formals are always in high demand, with sign-ups released in advance on a first-come, first-served basis—so it’s worth acting quickly when they go live. If you have any questions about attending a formal, feel free to contact our Vice President, Emily Dyer, who’ll be happy to help.
